Mission: The mission of The Haven Zoo is to establish a permanent, loving home for displaced exotic and domestic animals where they will be provided with a diverse diet, an educational habitat, and daily enrichment activities. The Haven Zoo's primary goal is to inspire and educate the public about exotic animals and the conservation issues their species face worldwide. The zoo focuses on rescuing animals categorized as threatened, endangered, or critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List, animals rescued from unfit homes, Georgia Department of Natural Resources, US Fish and Wildlife, and animals previously used in laboratory research.
Results: The Haven Zoo, Inc. is a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization founded by anthropologist JohnieSue Thurman. The zoo is located in Lavonia, Georgia, on 23 acres near Lake Hartwell. The zoo is dedicated to providing a permanent, loving home to a variety of exotic and domestic displaced animals. The animals receive life-long care with a diverse diet, an educational habitat and enrichment activities. The zoo offers an interactive environment to inspire and educate the public about exotic animals and the conservation issues they face worldwide. More immediately, it is committed to rescuing animals categorized as threatened, endangered or critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. We also take in animals rescued from unfit homes (facilitated by Georgia DNR and the US Fish and Wildlife) and animals previously used in laboratory research. This is one of the only zoos in Georgia that cares for rhesus macaque monkeys and African servals. We also care for lemurs, horses, goats, llamas, a donkey, pigs, chickens, and peacocks. Cats from the local shelter also have a place and a job at the zoo, and two great pyrenees rescues, Mollie and Maya, guard the perimeter. Since 2018, The Haven Zoo has rescued over 70 animals.
