Mission: To impact the lives of young people by providing educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf.
Programs: In 2017 our program served over 3,000 participants. As the year progressed, we dedicated our program to result in greater impact; meaning serve fewer students, but with more intention and stronger impact. Necessarily then, we moved our efforts to more localized schools and youth-serving programs and agencies so we could see the students more regularly and increase the chances of them subsequently matriculating into our certifying program. Further, our goal was to offer participants a richer experience: more regular and meaningful (i. E. , repeated) exposure to our life skills experience curriculum, resulting in greater self-exploration and deeper learning. Ultimately, repeated exposure and more frequent interaction with coaches is more apt to lead to positive behavioral changes and character growth among participants, which is our true and actual intention. Our focus shifted from seeing, for example,4,500 youth in quick, one-time settings; to seeing, for example, 2,000 youth (often multiple times) offering more frequent, in-depth learning and exploration opportunities. Program locations included our main campus at sycamore driving range, and 3 area golf courses. We also held programs in area schools: lansing school district; charlotte schools; leslie schools; okemos schools; williamston schools; a local charter school; and a private middle school. In addition, we partnered with two youth-serving agencies; and two learn/discover, non-golf institutions.
in 2017, capitol area golf for youths (also known as the first tee of mid-michigan, or tft) operated sycamore driving range for the city of lansing. This site enables the city to offer a public place for residents to fully practice golf within the city limits. This public facility is open to all; and offers a full spectrum of golf practice and skill development. Having domain of this facility also enhances our program experience for tft participants, as it is large enough to simultaneously accommodate in-class activities while the general (paying) public is at work practicing golf. To further enhance participants' experiences, the first tee of mid-michigan recovered and rebuilt two playing holes from the former course, allowing tft participants a more realistic "on-course" experience to explore golf, develop their own skills, and learn and appreciate moving around on a golf course.
