Causes: Education, Scholarships, Scholarships & Student Financial Aid
Mission: The Columbian Women was organized in 1894, five years after the first women students enrolled in the previously all-male Columbian College. (Columbian College became one of the units of the newly-formed George Washington University in 1905.) From the beginning, the organization has raised funds in order to provide scholarships for deserving women to continue their educations. Today, assets of greater than $1.7 million are invested partly as a portion of University endowment and partly in Columbian Women's own accounts. In 2000-2001, Columbian Women expects to award more than $100,000 in scholarships.
