Mission: The Basenji Health Endowment was founded in 1992 to promote, further and facilitate health research that will benefit and help to ensure the continued survival of the Basenji dog as a unique breed. Additionally, the Endowment serves to educate the general public as well as fanciers concerning (i) hereditary and non-hereditary health conditions affecting the Basenji dog, and (ii) the need for ongoing health research concerning these conditions.
Programs: Since 1992, the Endowment has made matching grants [along with the American Kennel Club] to facilitate research concerning Fanconi Syndrome, and has made multiple grants in support of efforts to locate a DNA marker for the Basenji form of progressive retinal atrophy. The PRA research presently is ongoing.
