Mission:
The AjA Project provides photography-based programming to youth affected by war and displacement; students think critically about their identities, develop leadership skills and become agents of personal and social change.
Programs:
Journey is an after-school, arts-based educational program for refugee youthin San Diego. Through the creation of visual narratives, youth think critically about their cultural identities, strengthen literacy skills and see themselves as agents of change. Journey uses participatory photography methods and a curriculum to addresslanguage acquisition, behavioral health, and the social capacity of youth. Thefollowing tools are utilized: (1) Activity design around behavioral health: writingassignments, small-group work, and photo-elicitation techniques, (2) LanguageAcquisition: Language acquisition teaching methods help students feel more confidentwith their language skills, (3) Visual Literacy: Visual ThinkingStrategies use art to teach critical thinking, communication skills and visual literacy, and (4) Evaluations: Evaluationsevaluate students in the following areas: photographic technique, languageacquisition, behavioral health, self-efficacy, and ethnic identity.
