Mission: The Advocacy Institute works to make social justice leadership strategic, effective, and sustainable in pursuit of a just world. The Advocacy Institute makes a difference by strengthening leadership and movements for political, social, and economic justice. Working with our partners to help make democratic institutions accountable, our work links us with a global community of grassroots activists and NGO leaders tackling critical human rights issues -- such as ending poverty, public health, gender equity, peace, community development, and preserving the environment.
Programs: The Advocacy Institute carries out its mission through two core programs: The Advocacy Leaders Program strengthens the leadership capacity, and advocacy and networking skills of social justice advocates in the United States and abroad, based on extensive needs assessments and collaborative planning. The program?s capacity building workshops and training programs fortify social justice movements through skill building, time for reflection, and networking with fellow advocates. A special focus of our Advocacy Leaders Program continues to be supporting the diverse leadership of the global tobacco control movement. Leadership for a Changing World, a national leadership award and recognition program funded by The Ford Foundation, selects and celebrates 17-20 extraordinary U.S.-based community leaders annually. Awardees receive funding and participate in semi-annual meetings where they learn from one another and enhance their leadership skills. Additionally, the inspiring stories of these leaders highlight the variety of forms of leadership that abound in American communities, and demonstrate how progress can be achieved.
