Mission: The mission of texas hope literacy is to transform offenders through the hope community reintegration models using peer-driven education within an evidence-based framework in order for them to re-enter society as productive and contributing members of their communities. The vision is to be the model program for prisons and jails everywhere. Our goals are to equip the inmates to be responsible citizens during their incarceration post-release so that they will be better parents to their children, our communities will be safer, and recidivism lowered.
Programs: Bridgeport female facility: this was a pre-release facility, average length of stay being three months. The dorm had limited space with 50 bunk beds occupying the better part of the room. The ladies worked out a schedule so they could tutor those needing math, which was their greatest need. Life skills to prepare them for going home was also a huge need. Volunteers taught domestic violence, parenting, reconnecting with families, and related courses to help them find employment. The managing corporation for bridgeport closed the unit down and all the females were moved to other facilities until they were released. Many of these ladies are out and are doing quite well.
dallas county jail: 1. Female dorm contained 64 inmates at all times. Average length of stay is 3 months, some releasing and others sent to prison. Some stayed longer due to awaiting trial. 2. Male dorm also contained 64 inmates at all times. Average length of stay is 3 months, some releasing and others sent to prison. Some stayed longer due to awaiting trial. These two models had education and life skills centers. Volunteers provided the life skills courses. The inmates tutored literacy and math. Texas hope literacy has many success stories from those who released directly from the dallas county jail. Many were given probation. Hope set up facebook pages for the inmates that were served. In this way, we are still able to stay connected with them and see their many successes. The reason we discontinued the programs on this site was the length of stay did not accomplish what we could do inside the prison. Since our organization's 1997 start date, hope former inmates have earned bachelor's and master's degrees. Today, one works in financial aid in a local college, another works in inner library loan department for a university, and two work for non-profit organizations. These are only a few. There are many success stories. Many have new babies, others have married, most have good jobs, but the best part they are staying free
