Mission: To maintain and enhance the tahoe rim trail system, practice and inspire stewardship, and preserve access to the natural beauty of the lake tahoe region.
Programs: Trail operations program: maintains and enhances the tahoe rim trail system by organizing and training volunteers to build, maintain, and improve its nearly 200 miles of trail. In 2017, the trta leveraged the support of 235 volunteers who contributed 10,800 hours to maintain every mile of the trail system. We removed 647 downed trees, hosted 52 public work days and 15 training days. 2017 season highlights included completing reroutes at mott canyon and near martis peak. Hazard tree mitigation and thorough trail assessments were completed on about 50 miles of trail, beginning a four year project that will encompass the entire trail.
trail use programs: promotes environmental stewardship, inspires a love for the lake tahoe region, and encourages healthy and sustainable living. Trail use programs coordinates opportunities for the public to experience the trail in many ways including hikes, snowshoe treks, youth programs, several backcountry skills courses such as snow camping 101 and backpacking 101, wilderness medical courses, and other trainings. In 2017, trail use programs facilitated 11 guided public hikes, seven youth backcountry camps, two thru hikes of the entire 165+ miles of trail, three multi-week segment hikes, 5 medical trainings, as well as other educational public programming. 70 volunteers gave over 4,998 hours to facilitate our public offerings for more than 845 people of all ages who participated in trail use programs, hikes, events, and trainings.
education and outreach programs: distribute information about events, programs, and opportunities facilitated by the association and the tahoe rim trail. In 2017, trta staff and volunteers reached more than 2,275 individuals through events such as trail talks, earth day celebrations, community festivals, and health and wellness presentations. In addition the association displayed eight leave no trace and trta program exhibits in regional libraries. The tahoe rim trail challenge, one of the trta's largest outreach programs was offered at no charge for community members and inspired 428 individuals to get outdoors and explore the tahoe rim trail. During the spring of 2017, the trta launched its newly redesigned website, the largest outreach tool for the association. Website traffic has shown an increase in visits up 30% from the previous site and continues to surpass old totals. In total, the trta leveraged over 18,000 hours of volunteer labor to accomplish the trta's mission.
