Causes: Food, Food Programs
Mission: To alleviate fod insecurity and hunger within the se polk community, including operating a summer lunch program and food backpack program in the southeast polk school district; to promote education, social development, and health of children in the same area; and to provide programs for children in the same area focusing on education, healthy lifestyles, and character development.
Programs: Kids cafe: provide a healthly lunch and learning oppurtunities to students in the se polk community during the summer months. Children have the opportunity to work through grade-based curriculum, focusing on academic achievement and goal setting, healthy living, life skills, stem and literacy. In 2017, 176 students registered for the summer program, an average of 107 meals were served per day, 3,960 meals were served in total, and 2,400 books were sent home with registered students.
backpack program: backpacks filled with school supplies are provided in the fall to students in need in the se polk schools and bondurant schools. In 2017, 318 backpacks were provided.
friday food bags: food bags are packaged weekly during the school year and sent home on friday with students who face food-insecurity over the weekend. An average of 80 students per week received bags over a six week period, totaling 480 bags.
operation merry christmas: christmas presents were purchased and handed out at the anawim housing development on hubbell ave in des moines to over 100 children, most of whom attend the altoona kids cafe summer program.
