Mission: Sustainable playland inc. (spi) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to implement a plan to restore the historical and environmental integrity of playland park and propose a plan for its evolution into a sustainable park that is fully in the public domain with increased open green spaces and access to the long island sound shoreline.
Programs: In june 2014, spi opted to exercise its right to terminate the 10 year asset management agreement which had been approved only by the westchester county executive and the county board of acquisition and contract in the first quarter of 2013. The westchester county board of legislators, the third required approval, had not approved the ama, which was necessary for the asset management agreement to be legally enforceable by spi. The ongoing delays in obtaining the bol approval put the project as originally envisioned in jeopardy. Going forward, the board of directors of spi will determine if it's feasible to continue their mission of assisting with the reinvention of playland amusement park. Subject to final approval of the bod of spi and whatever governmental approvals may be necessary, this will be done through three advocacy functions: i) to act as playland's chief private fundraiser, similar to what friends of parks does for all of the county's parks: ii) safeguard the historic nature of park and its traditions: and iii) reach out to residents from around the county to promote their interest and voice their concerns with respect to the future of playland park.
