Mission: The mission of sustainable long island ("sli") is to promote economic development, environmental health and social equity for all long islanders, now and for generations to come. Sustainable long island is a catalyst and facilitator for sustainable development. We cultivate the conditions, identify resources and provide tools to make sustainable development happen on long island.
Programs: Organized community input and public participation on behalf of new york state through the new york rising community reconstruction program - aiming to provide rebuilding and revitalization assistance to communities damaged by hurricane sandy and irene and tropical storm lee. Specifically sustainable long island worked as part of a consultant team focusing on the areas of oceanside/island park/harbor isle/barnum island; the city of long beach; lido beach/point lookout; and the village of atlantic beach/atlantic beach estates/east atlantic beach.
sli conducted community workshops and facilitated ongoing implementation of brownfield opportunity area projects throughout northwest hicksville and downtown riverhead.
continued to promote access to fresh, affordable produce in underserved areas through the implementation of food equity initiatives, such as building three community gardens in long beach, roosevelt, and freeport; providing technical assistance to seven youth-staffed farmers markets in roosevelt, bellport, flanders, new cassel, wyandanch, freeport, and great neck; and launching the healthy corner stores project in mastic beach by aiming to improve the quality of food available on local stores shelves and reconfiguring products and display space.
