Programs: Suncoast Voices for Children (SVC) was founded in 2004 by two Guardians ad Litem to provide for the unmet physical, psychological, educational and social needs of abused,
abandoned and neglected children in Pinellas and Pasco Counties. SVC works to prevent, protect and provide: prevent children from entering foster care, protect children in the dependency system, and provide for children who have been removed from their homes.
In 2018, SVC served almost 3,000 children who were either in foster care or at risk of entering foster care by providing them with a wide variety of items - from birth certificates to tutoring; dance lessons to Tae Kwan Do; birthday cakes to eyeglasses; beds and car seats to graduation fees. The needs are not always predictable, but to date, SVC has met every request that fits within its mission. Children who grow up in foster care struggle in many aspects of life. Of adults who were formerly in foster care, 65% experienced seven or more school changes as children (Casey Family Foundation). Fewer than half of children who were in foster care earn a high school diploma, and less than 3% earn a bachelor’s degree or higher. (Dave Thomas Foundation). Young people who were formerly in foster care are also far more likely to endure homelessness, poverty, compromised health, unemployment and incarceration after they leave foster care. (U.S Department of Health & Human Services Administration for Child Welfare). These statistics show that, while support services for children in foster care are needed, safely preventing children from entering foster care in the first place leads to better outcomes.
