Mission: THE SUMMER OPERA THEATRE COMPANY is a professional, non-profit organization incorporated in 1979 to produce opera, operetta and musical theatre presentations. Now entering its 27th consecutive season, the company continues to maintain its clearly defined mission : - To offer young artists professional training and extended rehearsal and performance experience in fully mounted, high quality productions; - To offer new roles to more established singers, enabling them to learn and perfect their roles before a critical audience in a smaller house; - To offer professional opera/musical theatre productions at reasonable ticket costs to the community, thus allowing attendance by patrons of diverse economic means. Summer Opera mounts two productions (12 performances, including 2 Preview Performances at no charge to Senior Citizens) each summer and employs over 200 salaried artists seasonally. National auditions for principals are held every other year and are scheduled for January 2006. Auditions for chorus and orchestra are held each spring. Summer Opera remains unique among other Washington, D.C. metropolitan area opera companies as it combines professional artists and technical staff with student interns -- who are also salaried during the season. Summer Opera performs in The Hartke Theatre, on the campus of The Catholic University of America where the independent company legally resides.
