Nonprofit Overview
Mission: Every year, more than 400,000 low-income high school students in the United States graduate, ready to go college, but don’t. Strive for College is working to change that. At college-based chapters across the country, Strive pairs high school students with undergraduate mentors, who guide them through the college application and financial aid process, beginning in the Spring of the student’s junior year. Strive for College will ensure that every qualified, low-income high school student has the information and support necessary to successfully navigate the college application and financial aid processes. While we do so, Strive for College will build a national movement of students, our future leaders, committed to lifelong social entrepreneurship, mentorship and service.
Results: The first Strive for College pilot model at Washington University in St. Louis worked with students at Wellston High School in Wellston, Missouri starting in the Fall of 2006. That year, only one of the 30 graduating seniors went to a four-year college. Two years later, after working with Strive mentors, 24 of the 27 graduating seniors went on to four-year institutions.
Target demographics: Strive for College serves two groups: low-income high school students and college undergraduate students. First, Strive helps qualified low-income high school students realize their potential by choosing the right colleges, successfully applying and finding financial aid. Second, Strive is working to build a national movement of college students committed to service and mentorship. These individuals will help to fulfill Strive's mission of furthering the academic potential of many high school students in low-income areas.
