Causes: Education, Literacy, Remedial Reading & Encouragement
Mission: Street poets, inc. Is an arts education based violence intervention/prevention program for at risk/high risk youth and young adults in the juvenille detention facilities and under served school communities of los angeles county. The programs dedicated to promoting through arts a spirit of non violence that inspires our youth to break self destructive cycles and become creative peacemakers in their communities.
Programs: Street poets led weekly poetry workshops serving incarcerated youth ages 13-18 in los angeles county juvenile probation camps. The workshops provided educational support for 75 youth at camp miller in malibu. Also, in collaboration with rhythm arts alliance (raa) we did a poetry drum workshop serving 75 more youth at camp miller and 50 youth at camp scott in north la county.
street poets led weekly poetry workshops at 6 los angeles high schools during the duration of the school year at: central high school, esteban torres hs, locke hs, fremont, yo! Watts, and west adams prep. Served roughly 150 youth through these workshops.
street poets runs two ongoing weekly workshops for youth and young adults out of our office space in mid-city los angeles: "seeking peace poetry & meditation workshop" with a core of 10-25 weekly participants, over 80 participants overall; "beats & rhymes session" workshop with 100-150 participants overall -- 15 of which produced a spoken word & hip- hop cd project this year entitled "street noise. "
