I have learned so much from Straw Hat Parrot’s! The health and happiness of their birds, any birds really, is their #1 priority! Watching the positive changes of birds that come in to be rehomed by them is inspiring! One day I hope to adopt one of the rescues from Straw Hat Parrot’s!
I adopted a blue and Gold macaw earlier this year. From the start James was great w communication. I went to visit the facility and it was impeccably clean. Birds water clear, cages clean, food in their bowls and toys in their cages. He has a separate room for his birds in quarantine. He takes time to know personalities of all the birds in his care. He allowed me to handle the birds I felt most comfortable which led me to the bird I ultimately selected. While I waited for Leo’s cage to arrive he held onto him for me. It’s been 3 weeks today that Leo has been home and James has answered every question along the way. I’d go back to them again
We have adopted 2 parrots from SHP. Everyone was very professional, educational, and the birds were well taken care of. They have gone out of thier way to provide an amazing facility dedicated to the welfare of the birds. Very impressed.
I recently volunteered at this rescue and was impressed by what I found. The facility is split so new birds can be quarantined until the vet gives them a clean bill of health. The cages were huge and all of the birds had plenty of room. While I was there the trays were all removed, scrubbed, lined and returned. The walls were scrubbed and floors cleaned. None of these were excessively dirty, just stuff you'd expect. The toys were checked for safety and replaced as needed (choking hazards). James introduced me to a few of the birds - knew each of their personalities - and they all seemed happy. He brought Zoro, Luffy and Icarus down for their daily exercise and honestly I could have cried watching them flying in all their beautiful glory as such creatures were meant to do. Icarus wanted to be friends and spent some time on my shoulder - sweet boy. I found James to be completely committed to all of the birds in his care. He's exceptionally knowledgeable, welcoming and I'm looking forward to coming back to volunteer again.

We adopted a Lorikeet from them in January 2023. They took the time to educate us about her care and have been so helpful since she came home. They are always willing to answer any questions we have and I'm very thankful for their expertise! We had such a good experience when we adopted her we came back to them to adopt another bird. We love this rescue and found their fees very reasonable. I can't recommend them enough!
Unfortunately i am to far away to visit or adopt but Straw Hat Parrots have always been very helpful and knowledgeable and taken time to answer my questions and give advice even though they are so busy. They free fly their birds as do I and I agree with the ethos behind it. They are an amazing organisation and I wish I was local but would support them any way I can.
I just adopted 2 macaws from this wonderful rescue. Our experience was perfect! He has been so helpful and has taught us so much. We enjoy seeing his posts everyday and watching all his birds. You san tell he cares a lot for birds and wants to help them in any way possible.
Thought this was a great parrot rescue turns out things are not what they seem. James is a scammer and breeds and sells birds. That he flys and encourages it is insane. Hes has aspirated a few birds (he posted the took it down) he also lies when he feels like it. Before you bring you bring any birds there do your research.
I love Straw Hat Parrots. They do such great work with rescued birds and take excellent care of their flock. Watching their flock members free fly is such a wonderful experience and I hope to train some of my flock to do so in the future. I learn a lot from their videos and posts about avian husbandry, free flight, and enjoy seeing their commitment to the species conservation of the Hyacinth Macaw and Vasa Parrots.
I had a young Vasa parrot who was not very well socialized, and did not appear to be happy in my home. After contacting Straw Hat and speaking with Janna via Facebook I eventually agreed to giver her my bird Layla. Janna thought she had a bird who would be much better suited for me and my home. She drove all the way from S. Carolina to New Jersey to get my bird because she felt shipping would be traumatic for the bird. Janna was right. I now have "Bob" Marley and African Grey who is adapting well and is great. Janna gave a video talk on Vasa parrots and after having her only 5 days, she had Layla kissing her, getting up on her and just acting like a different bird. I am so happy that I made the right decision and know that Layla is in the best home possible.
We traveled from out of state to bring home our new family member, and Straw Hat Parrots gave us the most extraordinary experience. Not only do they have amazing facilities for their animals, but they clearly care deeply about what they do and provide the most wonderful quality of life. Every bird has a clean space with everything they need, and Janna and James are so knowledgeable and kind. We are so happy with our new and forever feathered friend and will always talk about the cool experiences we had when going to pick him up.
From free tours of their aviary and public outings to educate and expose the public—Straw Hats are doing an amazing job in their mission! I can’t thank them enough for all they are doing and will do in the future for parrots. The love they have is undeniable and contagious.
Straw hats parrots is the best. We have learned so much from them. I adopted a lesser sulfur crested cockatoo from them. She is so sweet. They interviewed me before I could adopt her to make sure I knew what I was getting into. I love this place. They know what they are doing and it shows in how happy the birds are. Couldn't find a better place. Thank you straw hat parrots!
James and Janna at Straw Hat Parrots give every ounce of their being into the Avian Souls that cross there path!! The birds that come into there lives are not just rescues they are family you can see that by taking a look at any video or picture posted in a matter of hours a before and after picture shows a huge difference of the love that is poured into the birds that come in.
I love everything that they are doing for Macaws and the rescue birds that they bring in. Their involvement in their community in education and outreach is very helpful and inspiring. Whenever I have contacted them through messenger or commented asking questions in a posting, they have always been quick to respond and are kind and polite with their answers. Just wish we lived closer so we could free fly with them. They are a great asset to the avian community and are building a separate facility for their rescues, so they are here to stay. That commitment is important and it shows their passion and priorities. I will continue supporting them and their mission for the long run.
I have RARELY seen a rescue that VALUES flight! let alone have such an open mind. BOTH sides of this operation are a rescue if you ask me! for starters, they rescue, additionally, they breed species that are dying off in the wild. let me ask you this! how would we have bred and realeased Spix macaws if. we. hadn't. bred. them. in. captivity. where would we have gotten them?! space?? the deepest parts of the ocean?? I have communicated with these wonderful people, and am excited to continue doing so. I do rescue work myself, I know how hard it is. not every rescued soul survives. I've had a bird pass away on the car ride out of its former "home" think with an OPEN mind.
Yesterday, 9/15/22 Paula and I met James and Janna at there home and exotic bird refuge. It was time for me to find a home for my lovable sulfur crested cockatoo who has been with me for 20 yrs. As my health has been declining I decided to start looking for a new home for him. I spoke with numerous other rescues over the last couple years and nothing felt just right. I was referred to James through another rescuer . Sammi was instantly stress free and comfortable with his new home. What we experienced yesterday was mind-blowing and has left me some what speechless. James and Janna's love, devotion, knowledge, and care for all of God's creatures has given me a renewed faith in humanity. This experience will be with me throughout eternity. We can't thank you guys enough and I thank God for bringing us together. With love, Tom and Paula

It was absolutely amazing to meet you both! We always love being able to make a great connection with fellow parrot (and all animal) lovers. Sammi is doing great so far, he will see the vet in about a week and a half and from there we will start looking for a perfect family for him. He’s such a sweetheart and you can tell he was very loved
Great people that take great care of all of the birds in their care. They know the in’s and outs of each bird and are happy to spend time having a conversation with you about adoptable birds that catch your interest. Straw Hats seems to take great care to make sure bird and adopter are a good match, they will not sugar coat behaviors a bird may have. They also put a lot of work into rehabbing their rescues to get them healthy and adoptable, behavior wise, though great care and proper socialization. This rescue is always very clean and tidy, birds have great cages with plenty of toys and enrichment. I am a previous adopter and plan to adopt again from them. I also would not hesitate to surrender a bird to them if was ever in the situation I needed to do so.

Thank you for your kind words!
A very passionate and knowledgeable rescue. It has been two years since they introduced me my sweet rescue parrot. I have watched and learned from their care and expertise . It is unmatched.
They are so careful to care for the all aspects of a parrots needs, including its future. They are unwavering and uncompromising in their mission for the enrichment of Parrot lives.

Thank you for your review, loved connecting you guys!
A great rescue! Top noch care, wonderful enrichment and cages and toys and FRESH food they make themselves… I can’t say enough about their level of skill in training and healthcare for these lucky avians.
Highly recommended!!

Thank you! Sad you moved across the country, we miss you! If you ever come out this way, be sure to come stop by!
Can’t thank these two enough for providing a home for Ace! They are both very knowledgeable and 100% care for these birds. Whenever I come visit I see, fresh chop, new toys, amazing structures, to stimulate mental growth. Couldn’t have chose a better home for him. Thank you again for all your time and energy put into Ace

Thank you for your review! You know you’re welcome out here Any time :)
SHPR inc. is an incredible rescue! The owners truly love the birds. If they had it their way they would keep all these birds and teach them to fly free around their property. They love the birds and have literally let the birds take over their home. There are very few rooms you won't find several beautiful birds in and many of the rooms have become full-on enclosures for the birds. They truly take the best care of the birds from providing them with fresh chop daily, to enrichment with personal handling, and baths a few times a week. Most birds are kept cage-free unless they threaten the other birds. They try to find all their birds a buddy. You won't find a better place to find a bird that they have spent time with to bring to your forever home! James and Janna love what they do and the fiesty feathered babies in their care love them too.

Thank you Doug! Always a pleasure to see you! Can’t wait till we can get together again!
SHPR is one of the MOST knowledgeable and responsible rescues there is! The owners are the most passionate and caring people on the planet who have work closely alongside Veterinary professionals to provide optimized quality of health and care to each individual animal under their care. The amount of personalized care, quality food, and enrichment toys that each parrot is provided goes above and well beyond ‘normal parrot care’. There is never a question about the quality of life any animal has within SHPR INC properties. I will always recommend Straw Hats Parrot Rescue INC to any avian and animal enthusiasts!

Thank you for your review! You know you’re welcome out here Any time, miss you!
These people have incredible skill with birds and care deeply for them. Whoever this person is claiming they received a sick bird from them is just trying to dirty their reputation, and I imagine they’re another parrot rescue that thinks it’s better to undermine what should be a common mission than to build up someone else who wants the best for companion birds, which I think says all you need to know.
I know Jim and Janna would immediately do backflips to set things right if they found out a bird left their care sick.
Yes, they have begun breeding critically endangered species. This is to ensure they are able to continue self sustained operations as much as possible and to sustain select species.
If you want to turn your back on birds in need because the people who run the rescue breed a very small amount of very special species in very incredibly enriched, high standard conditions, then I suppose that is your loss and the loss of the birds as well.

Thank you for your review! We appreciate your sincerity and support! Welcome to come visit the yahoos and see some freeflighted macaws any time!
I had some family issues and gave the Straw Hat crew my bird to hold onto. They are the only rescue I would trust. All birds there are vetted for bloodwork, have FRESH raw food daily, pellets provided daily, and daily deep cleaning of living/play area and water. Birds are able to get out and interact with people and play. They also have toys to play with.
The other bird rescue everyone is naming has none of that. Birds are cramed in cages, not cleaned and only feed sunflower seeds which is unhealthy. Birds are not vetted either even when dead for a cause of death.
Take a trip to their rescue and you will see how well cared for these birds at the Straw Hat rescue are really cared for. You wont be disappointed and being given actual medical on the birds is a huge bonus.

Thank you! We miss you terribly and can’t wait to see you again!
I can’t say enough amazing things about Janna and Jim. Not only did we purchase an incredible harlequin macaw from them but they have gone about and beyond with boarding, training and helping us make the best decisions for our feathered kids. They are extremely knowledgeable, honest, professional and kind. They helped us with both of our birds through a difficult family situation and have never been anything but amazingly compassionate. If you are considering adopting, purchasing, or surrendering a bird you must talk to them first.

StrawHatParrots 05/23/2022
Always here to help these amazing creatures! Thank you for your support! Let us know if you happen to be in our area to come see all the parrots!
Love this rescue, completely honest and caring folks. I adopted a disabled bird from this rescue and I can not imagine my life without my Honker ❤️ Honker came with his vet records and X-rays. Love Janna and James

Thank you for your review! Always love seeing you, we really need to get together soon!
I'm not going to get mixed up in the drama between two rescues because I have ALOT to say.
What I will say is this, I knew the owners of straw hats when they worked with feathered friends.
I adopted a bird they were handlers for.
This bird STILL more than a year later gets so excited to see them, which speaks for the love they showed him.
I will also say that as a well qualified bird owner I have expressed interest in 3 birds with them to this date. I am just now up to get one of them. This is because they don't accept the first person to wave money at them, they look for the best fit.
Strawhats is primarily self funded. And yes, they've recently began to dabble in breeding AT RISK parrots, but that is not part of their non profit.
Educate yourselves, people.
Rescues have no room for rivalry when there are so many birds needing help.

Thank you for your review! So many folks don’t understand that we spare no expense for these guys and that 99.99% of it comes out of our own pockets! We refuse to be like some of the “big” rescues always begging for donations to feed the animals THEY promise to care for. They also don’t seem to understand our nonprofit and for profit businesses are completely separate, to the point they even have separate banks! Every parrot in our for profit business was purchased with personal funds from breeders.
Don’t know who “Jess ray” is, but considering they support feathered friends I’d guess they’re friends with the terrible people that run that place. Sick those people at Feathered Friends are resorting to this kind of pettiness, they should stick to neglecting and abusing birds and spending donations on their own personal expenses… “all volunteer” indeed.
SHPR does blood work on ALL parrots and has only had 2 macaws adopted out since they became a rescue in October, both with stellar blood work. This dummy doesn’t know what they’re talking about. They have never once hidden anything about Either of their legally owned and operated businesses.

StrawHatParrots 05/23/2022
Thank you for your review! We appreciate your support and can’t wait to see you again! It’s sad that petty people resort to smear campaigns to try to bring us down. It WILL NOT stop our mission to help those birds in need!
This ain't a rescue these are breeders. Just awful people. Sold me a sick macaw.

StrawHatParrots 05/23/2022
This is a fake "review". ALL parrots at SHPR are seen by our avian vet with blood work done to verify they are healthy prior to adoption. THIS individual has NEVER been to our facility nor adopted or "purchased" any parrot from us.
StrawHatParrots 10/13/2022
Thank you for your kind words! We absolutely love what we do and the needs of the parrots will Always be our top priority! We keep the 2 sides separate legally and financially as two separate legal business entities (they don’t even have the same bank), as the Straw Hat Parrots, LLC breeding program does not contain any surrendered/rescue parrots (they are all privately purchased and owned by the Weeks), but the Weeks frequently allow visitors to interact with them as they are incredibly rare or endangered species.
