Causes: Food, Food Programs
Mission: Our purpose is to impact the homeless community; young adults, women and families, by providing free, nutritious restaurant quality meals. Our aim is to empower this community by providing meals on a dependable basis so these individuals may focus on a path out of homelessness.22% of homeless adults suffer from severe and persistent mental illness… 25% of homeless women claim to have been abused within the last year… 22% of homeless women claim domestic abuse as the reason for their homelessness… 28% of homeless people do not get enough to eat. We became focused on those who were going hungry. We also realized that even those who were being fed were often surviving on an unhealthy diet of cheap fast food. So, what could we do? WE STARTED COOKING!
Results: When Stone Soup first began serving at The Road Home, various volunteer groups were providing meals to the single women approximately once a month. Attendance at these meals were low; groups would plan for around 50 to70 women, despite nearly double that number staying in the shelter. With Stone Soup serving the women on a biweekly basis, the number of women attending has doubled often reaching 200. The consistency of having a recognizable group, serving on a set day, was a draw to the single women experiencing homelessness, who are often in crisis and looking for stability of any kind. Beyond the dependability and kindness of our volunteers, is the quality of the food that entices the women. Because of the lack of kitchen facilities in the single women’s shelter, groups often provide sandwiches or other easy to transport meals. The women often ask for salad or other healthy foods but these items are often difficult for volunteer groups to provide. Stone Soup has been consistent in providing healthy, nutritious and satisfying meals, and our dinners tend to have the highest attendance rate of all volunteer dinners.

Direct beneficiaries per year: Stone Soup has served over 20,000 meals to homeless young adults, women and families at The Road Home and the Volunteers of America Youth Shelter. We are aided by 35 volunteers who have provided over 3,000 hours of service to the cause.
