Mission: To promote the mental health and emotional well-being of young people of color by building and sharing knowledge, implementing programs and partnerships, leveraging mental health technologies that provide supportive services to young people, and(see schedule 0)communicating strategically to build awareness and reduce stigma.
Programs: Young, gifted and at-riskthe fund's annual convening, young, gifted & @risk (ygar) symposium explores the mental health and emotional well-being of students of color. The only event of its kind in the nation, ygar attracts 300 scholars, campus administrators, mental health practitioners, students, community members, and families. The conference will be hosted in 2018 at ut austin and has been hosted in previous years at the university of pennsylvania, washington university in st. Louis, stanford, and brown.
equity in mental health frameworkreleased by the steve fund and jed in november 2017, the equity in mental health framework (emhf) is a first-of-its-kind document including ten actionable recommendations and practical implementation strategies for higher education leaders, administrators, and providers of student services. These recommendations incorporate structural changes in policy and practice that can reduce the stigma associated with student mental health challenges, increase proactive responses from colleges and universities, and provide more opportunities for students of color to thrive. The fund is working to continue dissemination and to move campuses from awareness toward systemic implementation of the framework across american higher education.
programs & partnershipsthe fund creates and delivers programs and services in partnership with colleges, universities, nonprofits,education pipeline organizations, and employers focused on the student life cycle including self care. Those programs and services include expert workshops mapped to the pain points of the student lifecycle including self-care for the transition to college, persistence through college, and transition to life beyond college. The fund offers similar workshops adapted for parents and families, and for staff/faculty professional development. The fund's experts also provide advice and technical assistance to help its partner institutions build capacity to serve students of color.
other program servicesknowledge center - the steve fund's knowledge center is a resource for expert information about the mental health and emotional well-being of students of color. With over 100 pieces of content including white papers, webinars, and videos of expert presentations and interviews, the knowledge center serves thousands of users across the country with access to the steve fund's library of content. Tech innovations - the steve fund delivers direct impact for students through partnerships with tech innovations. To accomplish this, the steve fund identifies innovative tech platforms that show evidentiary promise for delivering high-quality mental health resources and services to students of color across the country. The steve fund currently partners with these tech innovations: crisis text line, persistence plus, kognito, 7cups, and ybmen. Each of these partnerships delivers services directly to students through the tech platform, while the data outputs of this usage are used to inform the fund's ongoing research into promising platforms and behavioral health for young people of color. Youth advisory board - the steve fund youth advisory board supports the steve fund's programs, initiatives, and outreach efforts nationwide. Youth advisory board members promote the importance of education about mental health and emotional well-being.
