Mission: MISSION STATEMENTThe mission of SOCM is to assist Tennessee residents to protect, defend and improve the quality of life in their communities and across the state. From organizational roots in rural coal counties of the Cumberland Mountains and Cumberland Plateau, SOCM is working toward environmental, economic and social justice for all Tennessee residents. This includes stopping the devastation caused by mining, addressing environmental problems encountered in other forms of development, working for fair taxation, overcoming social discrimination and working on other local and statewide issues of concern to its members. SOCM is a member-run organization that encourages civic involvement among Tennessee people so that they may have a greater voice in determining their future.
Programs: SOCM members initiate and work for passage of legislation to require responsible management of natural resources by companies engaged in mining, timbering, and aerial application of chemicals. We monitor company operations and testify at both federal and state hearings. We work toward obtaining a fair and equitable tax structure in Tennessee. SOCM works to stop racism by offering Dismantling Racism workshops to its membership and others. Work and issue priorities are set annually by the Board, which is composed of elected members. The staff consists of the Executive Director, office personnel and field organizers who assist the members in their work projects. We have chapters across the state that work on local projects of concern to area residents. We currently have seven active chapters, some support chapters, and several inactive chapters.
