Mission: The mission of the seoc is to bring together and organize public school parents and community members in low-income cities in new jersey that have struggling school districts. We work together to identify common problems in the school system and develop and implement campaigns.
Programs: Asbury park chapter: the chapter successfully challenged the dysfunctional system of discipline that was resulting in very high rates of suspension beginning with first graders. A new, more student friendly policy that has decreased "push out and increased student achievement has been implemented by the chapter. This chapter also recently won their safety campaign, requesting courtesy bussing for elementary school children that must cross at least two major intersections without adequate crossing guards.
elizabeth chapter: the chapter's first accomplishment was implementing a "parental involvement policy" as the district did not have one. Their first campaign focuses on class size and graduation requirements vs. The new jersey state requirements. Their second campaign deals with the way the elizabeth board of education conducts their monthly meetings.
jersey city chapter: the chapter accomplished the goal of opening a parent center at m. S. 7,41 and 4 school. They also continue to press for the completion of the remediation of lead inthe water. This chapter also helps get parents involved in the superintendent search.
