When my boyfriend Mike and I started looking for a puppy last year we knew we wanted to get a rescue dog. We searched Petfinder for weeks, falling in love with photos and sending out emails that never got answered. We even filled out several online applications on cute puppies but it always seemed like we were too late, the puppy had been adopted to "another family" before we ever got to see it I sometimes wondered if the fact that Mike and I are a gay couple with no children meant that we weren't the kind of "family" that these dog rescues were looking for.
One Saturday we stopped in to PetSmart in San Jose to pick up a couple of treats for my mom's dog Coco, who we were babysitting for the week. There was a pen with little dogs up for adoption by STAR rescue, so we went up to the table and asked about puppies. The woman working there said she didn't have any puppies but started asking us questions about what kind of dog we wanted and why, and invited us to sit down and talk with her for a few minutes. Her name was Chris, and we ended up spending an hour with her and her coworker.
She was really chatty and we talked about much more than dogs and basically laughed our asses off for an hour. I think she knew my whole life story by then. Then she gave us her website and the name of a dog she wanted us to look at. I told her we would check it out, and Mike asked her what we should do if we were interested, was there an application to fill out? She said no, I don't use those, this was your application. She gave us her cell number and said I like you guys. I'm gonna find you a dog.
Now we have the best little guy ever, and we can't thank Chris and STAR enough. A boy, not a girl like we had planned, and three years old, not a puppy like we thought we wanted. Chris had helped us realize that with our work schedules a puppy would have been stressful. Our little chihuahua Zeke is the perfect match for us, and we never would have found him if it wasn't for her. She knew how to match the dog with the people.
I've referred friends to STAR, and my tennis buddy and his partner just adopted a chihuahua from them. Zeke and their dog Rojo are best buds now. I can't recommend STAR enough. You can tell they really care about the animals and about the people.
