Causes: Developmentally Disabled Centers, Disabilities, Human Services
Mission: Special children's friends mission is to provide programs and support infants, children and youth with special needs and their families.
Programs: Children's services: center based pre-school developmental programs, developmental playgroups and parental support. During the past year a capital campaign was held to raise funds to build an addition to the existing structure. The goal of raising 150,000 was surpassed and 200,000 was borrowed. Construction began in april 2017 and was completed in time for the start of a new school year in september 2017. The addition allowed special children's friends to increase capacity by 20% and to convert rooms in the older structure into more individual therapy space and an additional gross motor room. Administrative space was not increased with the new addition nor with the older room renovations.
case management services are provided for individuals with mental retardation and autism spectrum disorders from birth to age twenty-one. At the end of fiscal year 2017 a mental health license was obtained. Parents frequently requested that their child continue to receive targeted case management services through special children's friends when they entered public school even though they did not have the mental retardation or autism diagnosis. Beginning with the fiscal year 2017/2018 the mental health license will allow scf to continue providing the services to these children assuring continuity of services.
