Causes: Education, Scholarships, Scholarships & Student Financial Aid
Mission: To provide economic and therapeutic cooperation for groups or individuals seeking to improve their lives. The construction of a secondary school in la carreta, (municipality of villanueva, depto. Of chinandega) began in august, 2015. The first 2 pavilions and bathrooms were completed (february 8, 2016); in 2017, 49 students attended daily classes, and 154 followed a weekly curriculum. In addition, 26 secondary students from 5 other regional schools, and 37 teachers learned basic computer skills in the computer lab at la carreta on weekends and after school hours. Scholarships
Programs: Supporting education:1) the secondary school in la carreta (instituto augusto c. Sandino) continues to be a major focus of our organization as it is a commitment to the people to help them improve their opportunities for education, health, and prosperity. In 2017 there were 49 students in the first 2 years of the daily curriculum. Another 154 are studying in the weekly curriculum. In addition, 26 students from other regional schools are attending weekly classes to learn computer skills, & 37 teachers from those regional schools are learning computer skills after their regular school hours. The grants below were given to improve the lighting system and correct problems with the a/c ($3,048. The $15,000 allocated to amigos for christ, will assure a source of potable water for the school; that should become reality by june,2018.
supporting education: scholarships for 6 university students: rb graduated from the unan (managua) as a licensed physical therapist (the first for villanueva) in july, 2017; he is working in villanueva; oem continues studying in costa rica at the university of santa paula to become a speech therapist to serve her community in villanueva. Now in her 5th year, she expects to receive her licentiate in dec. 2018; em graduated as a secondary school teacher of english, in dec. 2017; ke is studying to become a social worker, finished 3rd year in december 2017; am completed 2nd year of nursing ed in 2017; nd completed 1st year to become a social worker in 2017. Total cost: $5,670.
supporting education: bikes, books, lap-tops, & maintenance of classrooms : bikes bought for 16 students who walk long distances to attend regional secondary school from several distant villages; 100 textbooks and other books bought and delivered to several primary and 2 secondary schools; 5 mac lap-tops were donated by bertschi school (seattle) for university students, and 3 for the teachers in the instituto augusto sandino; paint purchased for the brigadistas to paint their health education center classroom. Total cost of program: $3,273.
supporting health: day camp for children with special needs: 62 children & young adults (divided into 5 groups with their mothers) from several rural villages were assisted with transportation to day camp in town this year because the finca and swimming pool has been closed. The smallest chlldren enjoyed a wading pool, and the rest were satisfied with: music therapy, sports, arts & crafts, lunch, and health education. Our recently graduated physical therapist donated many hours of service for assessments of the newest camp members and therapeutic exercises at the camp and in patients' homes. 12 high school students who are deaf were driven by van to the la carreta computer lab to learn computer skills instead of the regular camp activities. Total cost $2,120.
supporting health: travel fund for 20 cancer patients to travel to managua for medical & treatment appointments; annual support group & luncheon for cancer patients; purchase of food supplies, needed medications, and blood tests for 2 extremely poor families. Total cost: $1. 656.
