Causes: Arts & Culture, Cultural & Ethnic Awareness
Mission: SFCN''s mission is to serve as a national resource center and a referral network for the Somali refugee and immigrant community as well as for refugee and mainstream service providers who interface with the Somali communities in the US. SFCN acts as a technical assistance organization providing training to strengthen the local communities'' institution building, advocacy, resource and leadership development. Through a website, a newsletter, and other training opportunities and materials, SFCN provides both Somalis, other immigrants, and their service providers with information on a range of topics aimed at improving the target population''s social and economic development such as: employment and job skills training; health education; access to mental health care; counseling services; parent education and child and youth services.
Programs: SFCN was successful in receiving several rounds of federal funding for Ethnic Community Development from the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) for our "Project Himilo", which means "to aspire" in Somali. This project buildsinstitutional capacity and leadership of Somali MAAs and increases the participation of the Somali refugees in their own development by promoting their ethnic community based organizations.
