Smoky Mountains Outreach Foundation or SMOF generated an initiative called VET SMILES, in collaboration with the East Carolina University Community Service Learning Center in Sylva, NC and NC Serves Western (as well as the respective Veterans Services Officers in the SMOF “sector”. VET SMILES provides support to veterans within the seven counties in Western North Carolina. All SMOF leaders as veterans; the Sylva ECU dental clinic is led by veterans and over 120 veterans have been enrolled. Dental services provided during 2019 range from exams and x-rays to full dentures. Donations can be made on the smoutreach.org website (which also contains a VET SMILES briefing packet).

During 2017 - 2018, the Smoky Mountains Outreach Foundation donated $2,500 to the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) programs at six Western North Carolina high schools: Cherokee, Enka, Madison, Pisgah, Swain and Tuscola.
