Programs: Small Steps Nurturing Center is a Christian non-profit organization that operates two preschools for approximately 180 students, ages two through six, living in low-income areas of Houston, Texas. Small Steps’ mission is to provide an exemplary early childhood program to instill and foster the social, emotional, physical, intellectual, and spiritual growth of economically at-risk children and their families. Small Steps’ program provides: a high-quality education, social and emotional support, a nurturing Christian environment, transportation, nutritious meals, speech therapy, and fine arts – drama, music, and creative movement. Small Steps invests in the lives of our students by intervening early, meeting their needs, and setting them on a path for success in elementary school and beyond. Small Steps’ program operates five days a week, 10 months each year, at no financial cost to the families we serve. Small Steps encourages parents in their role as their child’s primary teachers and intentionally creates opportunities to strengthen relationships with the families through required volunteer hours, parent education opportunities, and home visits. For a child to qualify for the program, new families must meet three requirements at the time of application: qualify for the free meals portion of the National School Lunch Program (below 130% of the national poverty level), live in zip codes 77003, 77007, 77008, 77009, 77019, 77020, or 77026, agree to complete at least 10 tuition hours each year by attending parent education events and volunteering.
