In Siskiyou County, one in every five people fall below the poverty level. Food is often the only flexible part of a family's budget and decreased amounts lead to purchases of low-nutrient, high carbohydrate foods that leave one feeling hungry again in a short time. Siskiyou Food Assistance provides it's clients with fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as nutritionally balanced food boxes. They are also currently working with the local elementary school and other non-profits to teach gardening skills to children and their parents, allowing them to gain control of and stabilize their food sources. Cooking classes are also planned.
This organization is run by an all volunteer staff of 25 people.
