Mission: Distribution of donated and purchased foods to low to moderate income clients and educate them in nutrition and life skills when possible.
Programs: Continued to provide nutritionally balanced emergency food boxes each wednesday. Sfa entered into an agreement with the local grocery outlet market which helps provide food and stabilize our expenses. This year sfa aided 700 families. Client provided volunteer program continues to be a great success. People enjoy being part of our team, and take pride in what they can offer to us.
In Siskiyou County, one in every five people fall below the poverty level. Food is often the only flexible part of a family's budget and decreased amounts lead to purchases of low-nutrient, high carbohydrate foods that leave one feeling hungry again in a short time. Siskiyou Food Assistance provides it's clients with fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as nutritionally balanced food boxes. They are also currently working with the local elementary school and other non-profits to teach gardening skills to children and their parents, allowing them to gain control of and stabilize their food sources. Cooking classes are also planned.
This organization is run by an all volunteer staff of 25 people.
