Causes: Education
Mission: To promote awareness and appreciation of architecture and design in south dakota.
Programs: The sioux falls design center works with our sponsors to host design events. 2014 sponsors include: south dakota state university, university of south dakota, aia sd, aiga, sdid, sioux falls arts council, falls foundry, ota, good samaritan society, plain green conference, lemonly, fresh produce and koch hazard architects. The sioux falls design center also partners up with other organizations and businesses including city of sioux falls, habitat for humanity sioux falls, live well sioux falls, exposure gallery, washington pavilion visual art center, east bank gallery, down town sioux falls, boyce greely lofts, spark letter press, etc woodworks, confluence landscape architects and lumber hunt. The sioux falls design center is involved in the down town sioux falls first friday's events. During 2014, the organization participated as follows:in march, june, august and october, we hosted pechakucha night events featuring 20 presenters with more than 200 guests in attendance. One of the presentations was promoted on global pkn's top 20 list of best presentations in 2014. Three presentations were promoted on global pkn's daily blog. In february, we hosted and event called meet the director & valentine card construction. 22 guests in attendance. In april, we hosted the habitat for humanity restoration art auction preview night with 30 guests in attendance. In may, we participated in the down town sioux falls art and wine walk. We hosted a live pottery event featuring jenna weir. More than 60 guests attended. We hosted a flag reception with aiga and ota on august 1. More than 45 guests attended. In october, we hosted the south dakota state university - division of design with more than 30 in attendance. In november, we hosted the aia sd awards with more than 30 in attendance. The foundation, through the sioux falls design center, participated in two plain green lectures. The january event featured david allan evans, a poet laureate of south dakota since 2002. The april event featured stephan tanner, an architect on the first certified passive house in north america. More than 30 guests attended these events. We held two student gallery shows in april, including one at the university center for three graduating graphic design students and one at south dakota state university. The second event was a juried show featuring print work and packaging. Through the design center, we held monthly picnic events with over 170 in attendance during series. The first competition was to establish a suitable flying banner for the city of sioux falls. Ted kaye, vexillogist and co-creator of portland's city flag was consulted. 91 flags were submitted by the public and 1,957 votes were case. A reception was held for the top six flag submissions, and the winner was announced. The second competition was the sioux falls chix pack coop design competition. Six designs were received from the public, of which three were given a stipend. Coops were constructed and put on display for public voting. 72 votes were cast. The coop winner was announced and a grand prize of $1,000 was awarded. The coops were then auctioned off to the public. October 3-10 was sioux falls design week. More than 200 attended this event, which included 10 events in the seven day period. Events ranged from a gallery reception for college design students, to a design focused lunch and learn, a loft tour, and workshops.
