Mission: To link older adults together in conceiving, planning, making decisions and the doing of services and programs that help some to survive and others to find meaning for life.
Programs: Home services and senior support services the shepherds center provides two home services friends for seniors is a friendly visitor program, which matches older adult volunteers with another older adult who may be homebound or experiencing isolation. In 2014, 10 volunteers were matched with 10 isolated older adults, providing more than 300 hours of service through the program. The minor home repair program includes 4 retired volunteers and some contractors, church groups, etc. Who donate their time who make repairs on the homes of lower to moderate older adults. In 2014, more than 100 repairs were provided through this program.
other programs other programs of the shepherds center of kck include adventures in learning, a monthly series that includes informational and educational workshops, health screenings, entertainment, lunch, and social networking. Other programs include creative classes such as crochet, knitting, paper crafting and plastic canvas, basic computer skills courses, exercise and health support groups, a book discussion group and a prayer shawl group. More than 580 participants were involved across these programs, and more than 2500 volunteer hours were provided to the community through these various activities in 2014.
next chapter program next chapter kansas city is a program of the sherherds center, which collaborates with other community agencies to provide help for persons in the baby boomer generation, in their second half of life as they transition from work to their next chapter. The initiative is designed to offer opportunities for meaningful civic engagement on a volunteer or paid basis. In 2014, next chapter kansas city hosted more than 6 networking sessions, 2 educational courses and one business basics for boomers, which had 62 in attendance.
