Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Education, Literacy, Remedial Reading & Encouragement

Mission: The Upper Manhattan Specialized Science High School Initiative (the Initiative) is dedicated to supporting the development of an educated elite from Harlem, East Harlem, Inwood, and Washington Heights. The Initiative will coach low-income middle school students from these neighborhoods for the Specialized High School Admissions Test (SHSAT). By passing the SHSAT, these disadvantaged children will gain access to Stuyvesant High School, the Bronx High School of Science, and Brooklyn Technical High School. These three Specialized Science High Schools have excellent national reputations, near-perfect graduation rates, and some of the best college acceptance statistics in the country. They are the gems of New York City's public education system. The Initiative's mission is to prepare low-income and minority students to share in the advantages offered by these schools.
