Causes: Citizen Participation, Environment, Environmental Beautification, Natural Resources Conservation & Protection
Mission: Scenic Virginia is the only statewide conservation nonprofit dedicated solely to the preservation, protection and enhancement of the scenic beauty of the Commonwealth of Virginia, with a particular focus on the preservation of significant viewsheds.
Results: We coordinated the statewide, multi-agency effort to bring the National Scenic Byways program to Virginia. In our first attempt, we were rewarded with four new America's Byways.Right now we're developing a Virginia Viewshed Register to catalog and define the beautiful vistas in Virginia. In Virginia’s capital city, we led the charge to pass a new, ambitious Downtown Master Plan. Working with VDOT, we crafted new policy for the trimming of roadside trees. We have introduced successful legislation and fought harmful billboard legislation introduced in the Virginia General Assembly. Programs: The following is a sampling of Scenic Virginia's current efforts: - Development of the Virginia Viewshed Register program to confer official state recognition on significant views. - Presentation of the Annual Scenic Awards, with a particular emphasis on projects that can be replicated in other areas of the Commonwealth. Scenic Virginia presents awards in the following categories: Scenic Viewshed Preservation, Scenic Water Corridor Preservation, Creative Scenic Enhancement, Scenic Tourism, Anti-Litter, and Scenic Hero. - Presentation of the Annual Virginia Viewshed Photo competition, which sensitizes Virginians to the beautiful vistas in the Commonwealth. - Legislative: We monitor legislation during the General Assembly and at the local level to ensure that citizens are aware of the benefits of scenic beauty, as well as potential threats. - Following our successful efforts several years ago to bring the National Scenic Byways program to Virginia, we have continued to promote the value of the program to citizen groups and businesses.
