Causes: Environment, Water, Water Resources, Wetlands Conservation & Management
Mission: Our mission is to restore and protect barnegat bay and its ecosystem. We advance our mission by being a strong and independent voice for the bay throughout the watershed, including all of ocean and part of monmouth counties. We do this through effective educational programs and targeted advocacy campaigns that engage our supporters who cherish the bay as a natural, recreational, and economical resource for the community and all of new jersey. Our supporters generously back the work of save barnegat bay, giving us flexibility and a strong foundation from which to grow.
Programs: Advocacy campaignsmet with senator booker to discuss proposed cut-backs in federal environmental protection programs that support clean water initiatives and their impact on barnegat bay. Met with njdep officials and filed appeal to challenge the forked river bayfront cafra permit to cover the beach with a revetment and gabion structure. Settled litigation with six flags great adventure in jackson township with increased acres of preservation land. Gov. Christie signed our legislation into law requiring the nj transportation authorities to use native plants. Testify and submit comments for manchester township heritage mineral superfund site development proposal. Submitted comments on eagle ridge development in lakewood. Fought development of green acres land at traders cove in brick township form commercial restaurant development. Pushed for route 35 pump station damage to be addressed and remediated. Participated in the re-draft of the barnegat bay comprehensive conservation management plan. Continue to fight proposed dense development proposal in manchester & toms river border as walmart withdraws as the developer. Assisted neighborhoods with local questions and environmental issues.
public education and outreach programs hired new education & outreach coordinator in may. Educated over 500 students in 6 townships within ocean county. Awarded student grant program to 9 participants this year for the water quality team project. Conducted several programs with enviroscape with potter creek. Expanded barnegat bay champions program with educational programs at the yacht clubs, country clubs, and private beach communities. Barnegat bay stewards program held at civic organizations, garden clubs, and homeowners associations. Herbarium and janet's garden programs educated participants. Learn and discover with us programs held throughout the watershed. Attended 20 public events in 2017, created new partnerships. Provided 37 presentations to a total of 800 people were educated. We had 7 student interns for 2017 and a total of 356 volunteer hours.
projectscontinued to work on the paul "pete" mclain archive collection for use in the public domain and ocean county library collection. Made trail improvement at the new ecocenter location. Conducted digital streaming barnegat bay headwaters tour of tributaries running to barnegat bay. Made updates to janet's garden and emily decamp herbarium at island beach state park, worked with state and county officials to install entering barnegat bay watershed signs at 9 major roadways and 3 major bridge crossings. Worked to develop design plans for new outdoors classroom at ecocenter.
