Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Arts & Culture, Cultural & Ethnic Awareness, Environment, Environmental Education, Forest Conservation

Mission: The Gatherer Institute is dedicated to restoring 60% of the Great North American Forest in the next 100 years. To this end, in our first year of operation, we have protected 88 acres and have used this acreage to create primitive structures which serve human purposes, while actually enriching the environment. We offer outdoor programs in storytelling, survival skills, anger management, and counseling. We work with the local Department of Corrections, School Districts, and Native American groups. Our bylaws force us to spend 90% of our budget "In the field" on direct delivery of programs, including teacher salaries, land acquisition, tools and food for the many needy families who come to our site for food and storytelling.

The Gatherer Institute has helped many, many kids since it's founding in 2002 and also provided Native American storytelling workshops to inspire us all to be better caretakers of the Earth. In addition to planting thousands of trees, it has also been instrumental in preserving 88 acres of forest woodland from predatory real estate builders. In 2007, I helped The Gatherer Institute organize its first NJ Walkabout whereby students were sponsored by local businesses to walk a 200 mile loop to plant 1000 trees for the seven generations to come. In addition to receiving public recognition from the Governor's office of NJ, the Gatherer Institute was also officially endorsed by soon-to-be-President, Barak Obama. Needless to say the Walkabout was a tremendous success and I have continued to work on a number of projects with Native American storyteller Kenneth Little Hawk to raise awareness about caring for the earth. Our current project in 2014 is a film about Little Hawk visiting a 40,000 year old Aboriginal tribe in Australia. The film is called One Heart - One Spirit.
