I’m beyond grateful to “Save a Small Dog Rescue” as I am in love with my new bundle of joy and happiness “Buddy.” Laurie after talking with me felt I would be a great match for this darling 4 year old poodle mix and asked if I could meet the Foster Mom Elaine at Petco around 3 pm. Elaine was so sweet and kind informing me all about Buddy and his back story. I feel so honored and blessed they chose me to be Buddy’s new forever home as I am so in love with him and I am cherishing every day with this beautiful boy as he likes all the neighbors and their dogs. In fact, they gave Buddy his own Welcome Home Party and he received a lot of kisses and dog sniffers during the party. A tremendous thank you with all my heart ❤️ to this outstanding rescue who went out of their way to make this adoption happen! Buddy sends his love ❌⭕️❌⭕️

Last week, I was searching for a Schnauzer/poodle rescue and found 2 young dogs, Winnie and Sassy, on the Rescueme.org website. The descriptions of Winnie and Sassie said that they were both spayed, and their umbilical hernias would be repaired before adoption. I completed an application online and was contacted by Laurie, owner of Save a Small Dog Rescue. I explained that my husband and I were both retired and were experienced owners of a beloved Portuguese Water Dog who had passed away a year ago. I spoke with Laurie at length and shared our information about our home and its suitability for a dog, and also shared our financial information. Laurie told me that the dogs weren't actually spayed yet, and their umbilical hernias hadn't been repaired. Since the Rescueme.org website stated that Winnie and Sassy were already spayed and that their umbilical hernias would be repaired before adoption, I assumed that Laurie would take care of this. She agreed and said that she would take Winnie to her vet that week to be spayed and her hernia repaired, and we could pick her up on June 16th at the Petco in Beaumont where she went each week to show her dogs to possible families. She also told me to purchase a smaller crate than we already had. We were so excited to find Winnie and began to plan for her arrival. But we got a call from Laurie the next day telling us that her vet said to wait until Winnie's baby teeth had fallen out so that any that were impacted could be removed at the same time as her spay and hernia surgeries were performed. This would require us to wait another month which I said was OK with us. Next day, Laurie called again saying she had "bad news". She said that there was a lot of interest from people who wanted to adopt Sassy and Winnie, so rather than wait for us to adopt Winnie, she would see if another family was interested in adopting her at Petco! We were broken hearted with this news! Trying to understand what was going on here, it seemed that Laurie didn't want to pay for Winnie's spay and hernia repair, and she had decided to let someone else adopt her who would pay for these expenses. Laurie then said that she had another dog for us if we were interested! By this time, we were upset by Laurie's dishonesty and the inconsiderate way that she treated us. I decided to write this review after seeing that Winnie and Sassy are still on the Rescueme.org website. I'm hoping that their profiles will be removed and that someone from the "Great Nonprofits" organization will do a site visit of Laurie's non-profit shelter. She shouldn't be allowed to have rescue dogs if she lies about their medical condition.

The policy for Save A Small Dog Rescue (SASDR) is to ALWAYS cover the expense of spay or neuter. For puppies who are too young to undergo the procedure, the adoption includes the "Spay and Neuter Contract". Unlike most dog rescues, SASDR even CHOOSES to have needed clinical AND surgical procedures performed and covers the full cost. To assume that Laurie didn't want to pay for the spay and hernia repair and decided to let someone else adopt and pay for the expenses is completely wrong. It should also be noted that the reviewer lives in Northern CA and was unwilling to commute back down to Southern CA for the spay and hernia repair to be performed by our contracted veterinary hospital,

I have been volunteering with the rescue for almost two years and have experienced first hand the effort that goes into rescuing and finding the best forever homes for the dogs. Most of the rescues are in terrible shape, dirty with matted hair, fleas, ticks, and decaying teeth. Laurie keeps a dog at the rescue until it is spayed or neutered and other care is provided. During that time she gets to know the dogs’s personality. When a dog is then ready for adoption, Laurie can provide prospective adopters an idea of how a dog will fit into their family. The most important thing is to find the best fit for the dog. Most of them have already been through so much, it’s essential to take the time to make the best choice. I am grateful to Laurie for what she does everyday to not only save the lives of these dogs, but for providing the opportunity for them to live their best life with their new families.

Laurie Barnum runs Save a Small Dog Rescue and she dedicates so much of her time to this endeavor. We gave Bailey, our Biewer Yorkie a furever home almost three years ago now. Laurie has done such a wonderful thing for Bailey and others just like him and we are so grateful for her service. We make a small monthly ongoing contribution to her organization and it is our way of thanking Laurie and her staff for the wonderful service they provide to animals just like Bailey. Every weekend, Save a Small Dog Rescue holds an event in Beaumont, CA where the public can view and hopefully adopt a new pet for their family.

I have worked with a lot of organizations, MOST do what is necessary, i.e. fix, shots, microchip, a few go above and beyond to get grooming done. Save a Small Dog Rescue, Inc. gets the teeth and any other issue taken care of before the dog is adopted out.

They have had dogs for years, waiting for their furever homes!

I have not seen another organization do things better.
