Mission: A group of visionary horticulturists imagined a research center that would be dedicated to introducing attractive, dependable plants that could be produced on a scale to maintain California as one of the most beautiful regions in the world. In response, they created the SARATOGA HORTICULTURAL RESEARCH FOUNDATION. It is a unique cooperative effort of nursery professionals, botanical garden and arboretum managers, and avid hobbyists all over the world. The results of this collaboration can be seen today in California's open spaces, both public and private, which are lush with Saratoga plant introductions. Foundation publications have helped change the way California landscapes. Maintenance and propagation techniques developed at the foundation's research station have allowed the mass use of previously rare or unavailable plants.
Programs: The Research Process: Bringing New Plants to Life. Only through an arduous research process can the Foundation be certain the new plants it introduces will really succeed in California's diverse landscape. The Research Committee and staff select plants as possible candidates for introduction. Selections are based on a range of criteria including water and maintenance needs as well as neatness of habit, attractive foliage, flowers or fruits; autumn color; and adult size. The most interesting candidates next enter the Foundation's unique Statewide Plant Evaluation Network for trial in a variety of climates, soils and maintenance regimens. The Research Network includes botanical gardens, arboreta, college campuses, and municipal street tree programs throughout California. Finally, landscape professionals and horticulturists rate the plants. When a successful plant is finally introduced to the nursery trade and the public, we can guarantee it will be a most valuable, reliable addition to the California landscape!
