Nonprofit Overview

Mission: The very essence of the Foundation is to create a culture of firsts for the students of San Ysidro. We are encouraging children to be the first person in their family to stay focused on academics, to be the first to graduate from middle school and high school, and the first to look beyond the limitations of poverty to envision opportunities that include college and successful careers.

This foundation is helping.... I mean really helping... the poorest of the school districts in California. Over 30% of the children are classified as homeless. Jesus Gonzales and his team have rolled up their sleeves and provided support for the children by providing mentoring opportunities with Navy and Police volunteers, as well as funding for robotics and other cool opportunities for the children. I am proud to be associated with this group.

I am a volunteer grant writer, and working with San Ysidro Education Vanguard Foundation has been amazing. The leadership clearly has passion and a solid goal to help youth as well as grow the program.
This foundation will make a positive impact on the lives of youth.

This is a wonderful organization with extremely passionate and knowledgable leaders from the board level to staff. They are collectively committed to advancing education success for all children in a small K-8 school district with very unique challenges. In the midst of those challenges, the SYEVF sees opportunities and inspires others to do the same.

As a former "at promise" student, an educator, and business owner, I am proud to be a San Ysidro Education Vanguard Foundation board member. I truly believe all children can and will reach their full academic potential when given all the tools they need to succeed. Some of these tools include social and emotional support, exposure to hands on activities involving real life situations that make learning come alive, high standards for all students, and a community that supports student learning. The San Ysidro Vanguard Foundation provides direct support to the students of the San Ysidro School District by providing learning opportunities with the expectation that each student will benefit academically, socially, and emotionally.

San Ysidro Education Vanguard Foundation is a fabulous place for children to learn about science, technology, engineering, and math. An effective program that helps keep students engaged and in school as well as builds self esteem and confidence. The staff are competent, compassionate, and creative. The administrator accessible and an excellent problem-solver. The courses are interesting, entertaining, and cutting edge. Definitely worth the investment!

The San Ysidro Education Vanguard Foundation is THE non-profit organization whose focus is the children of the poor unincorporated town of San Ysidro. It is our goal to see that every student of the San Ysidro School District succeed in his or her academic endeavors and become a well-educated and responsible citizen of our nation. Of the ~5200 students in the district, 92% are Hispanic, 86% are English Second Learners, 84% live below the poverty line, 42% are "homeless", and less than 1% actually attends school in the district for their entire K-8 educational years. However, over the past six years, through the hard work of the volunteers of the San Ysidro Education Vanguard Foundation and its predecessor, in support of the District Superintendent, the Principals, the Teachers and the District Staff, we have been able to significantly help the San Ysidro School District raise its Annual Performance Index by 118 points to a score of 802 in AY 2013! The significant progress that has been achieved throughout the past five years is remarkable and must be sustained for the sake of our most valuable asset - the future of America - the Students of the San Ysidro School District!

Taking into consideration the complexity of the needs of the youth of San Ysidro, this young non-profit has succeeded in generating awareness at a very fast pace within the families, community leaders, and elected politicians, of the importance of supporting the youth of San Ysidro with Education Projects. The new executive director Jesus Gonzalez is an asset to the team! SYEVF is setting a solid foundation to continue making a difference for the students of San Ysidro in the years to come.

I have never been associated with a better non profit--one that makes a real difference in the lives of children every day.

It is difficult to put into words the joy that so many of us get from giving of our time, talent and resources to organizations like San Ysidro Education Vanguard Foundation. I personally have been extraordinarily impressed with the power of this young organization to make a difference in the lives of children during their formative scholastic years, Pre K to 8th Grade. The Foundation proves that every child can learn and that every child should be given the opportunity to prepare for an increasingly technical future.

In both for profit and not for profit, you are only as good as your employees. Jesus Gonzalez, this year's best addition to the SYEVF, is a star, and will make a great difference for the foundation and those whom they serve. I look forward to seeing them grow and expand their reach.
