This young group is off to a good start and has been out raising funds to support San Jose's parks, trails and community centers. These amenities have been impacted by city budget cutbacks, and it's good to see a group focusing on maintaining a vital parks and recreation center. The volunteer board interacts with PRNS staff and advocates for parks. Led by an experienced nonprofit director with populist passion, I have high hopes for SJPF.

Mission: The san jose parks foundation is a community-based nonprofit organization dedicated to advocating for san jose's parks and trails and the programs within them, by empowering residents and volunteers and securing private donations.
Programs: Citizen empowerment: san jose parks foundation works in partnership with citizens, neighborhood groups and other nonprofits, as well as with the department of parks, recreation & neighborhood services. The foundation often acts as fiscal sponsor for projects and programs of citizens and helps to cut red tape, offer advice and infrastructure support for fundraising and general organizing. Advocacy: the foundation provides advocacy for parks and trails and community centers on behalf of the community, often in association with other groups, citizens and sometimes city officials. The foundation also advocates on behalf of the department of parks, recreation & neighborhood services within the city government. Volunteer support: san jose parks foundation supports the citys volunteer program for parks, recreation & neighborhood services. Working with mollie tobias to recruit, train and manage volunteers in the city parks, trails and community centers. Youth programs: many of the severest budget cuts made in 2009-2010 were in youth activities. Some were cut altogether and others had to charge fees where once the activities had been free to all youth. San jose parks foundation tries to help support these programs by funding them or subsidizing low-income youth participants who require such support.
