Mission: San Diego Hunger Coalition leads coordinated action to end hunger in San Diego County supported by research, education, and advocacy. Our vision is that everyone in San Diego County has enough food for an active, healthy life.
Results: The San Diego Hunger Coalition leads coordinated action to: 1. Build a more effective and interconnected system of food assistance resources 2. Enable low-income individuals and families to purchase more healthy food by increasing participation in CalFresh, a monthly supplement to a household’s food budget 3. Ensure all children have year-round access to healthy food by expanding school meals and other federal child nutrition programs 4. Advocate for legislative and administrative policies that reduce hunger and increase access to healthy food
Target demographics: According to the latest research by San Diego Hunger Coalition, with guidance from the Hunger Free San Diego Advisory Board, an estimated 1,000,000 (1 in 3) people in San Diego County are Nutrition Insecure as of November 2020. That is up from 821,000 (1 in 4) in 2019 and is comprised of approximately 603,000 adults, 284,000 children, and 146,000 older adults who experienced, or were at risk of experiencing, hunger or malnutrition.
