August 20, 2019, shortly after military medical retirement for complex post traumatic stress disorder, I attempted suicide. Following my failed attempt to take my own life, I relied on self-isolation to endure a world I could barely breathe in because of my endured traumas. I reluctantly sought help and was referred to SailAhead via Northport Veteran Affairs and I am now interacting with the world again. SailAhead is a remarkable organization, led by a remarkable family who with compassion, kindness and authenticity represent what is right in a world where there is so much that could be frowned upon. The 219 name tags they carry to raise awareness of mental health and US military service member/veteran suicide is a touching reminder that even those who wear the uniform and volunteered to face what service-members must for the safety of the United States of America, people are people and when no one sees you or your pain, the temptation to leave this planet can be too compelling to be denied. I've been helped by seeing that there are genuine, kind, authentic people who do care.
