As the Volunteer Coordinator at Safe+Sound Somerset, I am always amazed by the compassion and drive of our volunteers. Their motivation to make a difference in the lives of victims of domestic abuse is extraordinary.
Volunteers who complete the 40 plus hours of domestic abuse education/training state that they do not want it to end. They have reported that their lives have been changed by the experience. Some have included their families and gone on to volunteer in various ways throughout the community, not exclusively with our organization. Others have enrolled in college to pursue careers in the field. While still others have found the courage to reach out to victims in the community who are experiencing domestic abuse and offer a supportive hand.
Volunteers are essential to Safe+Sound Somerset's mission to stop the cycle of violence and end domestic abuse once and for all. They are a life line to those who are drowning. I am humbled to know these inspirational souls.
Safe + Sound has done a lot for me, but one big thing is it has provided me with a large amount of knowledge and information. I've never been more informed about what domestic violence is and how it can affect not only the survivor but others around him or her. Safe + Sound provides excellent counseling, case management, and legal advocacy work that really puts the client first, shows empathy, and promotes empowerment. I am proud to be a part of the team here at Safe + Sound and feel as though the agency has done, and will continue to do, good work that is needed.
As the Development Director of this nonprofit, I am often out in the community promoting the agency. Quite often a survivor will come up to me and express their gratitude because they went to Safe+Sound Somerset for help. Some have even told me that if it hadn't been for Safe+Sound Somerset they may not be alive today. The work we do has a direct impact on the lives of members of our community empowering them to move from the life of a victim to one of a strong survivor with a future filled with hope.
The many services we provide empower victims and engage the community to break the cycle of violence. Speak is our teen program meant to teach teens about healthy relationships. Since one in three teens will be in an abusive relationship before they leave high school it is imperative that we do more to educate our students about dating abuse and the connection to domestic abuse.
If you or someone you know is in an abusive relationship, please reach out for help. Our services are free and completely confidential.
