We adopted a dog from Safe Hounds Beagle Rescue Inc. many years ago and it was a wonderful experience.
They take wonderful care of their dogs and get them ready to find a forever loving home and are also committed to the dogs and families who adopt them throughout the lifetime of that dog.
We had a wonderful 11 years with our little beagle that came from Safe Hounds and we would definitely adopt from them again.

I have been supporting Safe Hounds Beagle Rescue for many years and I continue to do so because I have seen the good work they do to help the homeless hounds. They often take in dogs from kill shelters that otherwise would not get a second chance. Many of the dogs have medical conditions or behavior problems that require a long time to rehabilitate. Many other organizations would not be willing to invest the time or money into saving these animals. The focus of this organization is on what is in the best interest of the dog with the goal of placing them in a forever home. I feel good knowing that my financial support is helping to save the lives of these wonderful little hounds.

I have adopted two beagles from Safe Hounds Beagle Rescue and Karen Philhower. She goes above and beyond the adoption process, including two home visits to make sure family and dogs are a good fit. The first was to access the safety of my house and yard for our new furry addition, especially since beagles are masters of escape. The second visit was to meet our new dog at a meet and greet with the family. I have had my beagles now for over 8 years--I adopted a second six months after the first one-- and Karen is always there with advice in case I run into any health or behavior issues with either of them. I am so thankful I chose Safe Hounds to find my furever friends. Karen is amazing and her organization deserves the highest of praise and support. Thank you.

I adopted a beagle from Karen over 10 years ago and she was fantastic in every aspect of the process. I never had a dog before and she made a personal visit to my home with Luke and gave me all the advice to help my new dog make the adjustment. I’m actually looking to adopt another beagle from her.

What you may not know is that Safe Hounds Beagle Rescue is a very small operation with a very big heart.

When I inquired about adopting from Safe Hounds Beagle Rescue, I had to fill out an application; provide references; proof of veterinary care for my other pets; and set-up an in-home visit. Safe Hounds spent a lot of time understanding my motivation for adopting a Beagle and helping me understand what to expect.

While this may seem extensive, I appreciate how thorough the process of adopting from Safe Hounds Beagle Rescue is. When I did adopt, I was so happy with the match that I adopted from Safe Hounds Beagle Rescue again a year later.

My family enjoyed many happy years with our 2 Beagles and have wonderful memories. Sadly, over the course of 13 years we lost our 2 cherished Beagles. When we felt ready to open our hearts and our home to another dog, we looked to Safe Hounds. We adopted again this past spring, and once again feel the joy in our hearts that can only come from a beloved Beagle.

Safe Hounds Beagle Rescue is an extraordinary rescue from which I am so fortunate to have adopted 3 amazing Beagles. I am eternally grateful.

We adopted Molly(Leigh) in May 2006 after a rep from SHBR brought Molly and another beagle to us to look at & spend a little time at our home. Our other girl, Honey, had to be euthanized in November 2005 due to renal failure. Molly was my mother's from day one. For a dog that couldn't figure out the staircase that morning, she climbed them that first night to sleep in a chair beside my mother's bed. The first few weeks when I would get close to her, I though I would hear a low growl. I did. Safe Hounds helped me through her issues, even though she was our fourth beagle. She turned out to be the sweetest of them all. SHBR sent me condolences when my girl passed in December 2017. We miss her greatly.

I was first introduced to Safe Hounds Beagle Rescue by friends who had adopted a beagle from them. I contacted them to adopt an older beagle since I had raised three beagles from puppies and wanted to avoid that stage. I found the process to be wonderful! Safe Hounds is very concerned about the "adoptive parents". They called my references and visited my home. I adopted a wonderful 6 year old beagle who is now 13! I would definitely recommend Safe Hounds Beagle Rescue to anyone interested in adopting a hound!

Safe Hounds brought me the best friend I have ever had. I adopted my Winnie from Safe Hounds a couple years after my mother adopted her Shelly, also from Safe Hounds. Winnie was the kindest and most gentle soul I have ever encountered. I am so fortunate to have been her Mom for over 10 years. Shelly brought so much joy to my mother's life too. She passed away within two months of Winnie's passing. Karen Philhower runs a fantastic organization. All of the dogs are well taken care of and loved. I am so impressed at how strict she is about screening potential adopters to ensure her rescued dogs go to safe and loving homes. I would recommend her organization highly. If you are not in a position to adopt or foster, please consider sending her a donation or supplies. Everything donated directly benefits the sweet beagles in her care.

Safe Hounds Beagle Rescue Inc. is an amazing organization dedicated to saving and caring for humankind's best friends until they can be adopted into their forever home. My husband and I were adamant about adopting through a rescue shelter and we were BLESSED to have found Safe Hounds. Karen Philhower and her organization do an amazing job of not only rescuing these dogs from kill shelters and other negative enviornments, but they provide a loving, safe environment in which the dog's medical, social, and emotional needs are met. Safe Hounds Beagle Resuce's involvement does not simply end with the adoption of your dog. Rather, Karen and the organization are an endless line of support and assistance for any of your beagle-related quesstions or needs. She and the organization genuinely care about the work they do and the animals they save!!!!

My husband and I searched for a beagle rescue and Safe Hounds was great. They really make sure that the beagle is placed in their "forever" home. I was so impressed by the medical treatment/services Brandie received prior coming into our care. We had all of her medical records. Safe Hounds is still interested in how Brandie is doing and she has been in our home almost 3 years. I would adopt again from Safe Hounds

My wife and I were hoping to find a beagle for adoption to love and share our home with. We found Safe Hounds Beagle Rescue when looking at the available beagles for adoption online at Petfinder. We looked at Safe Hounds Beagle Rescue's website and saw pictures of two beagle mix dogs, one named Emily and the other Francesca. We immediately filled out an application. We were contacted by Karen Philhower at Safe Hounds Beagle Rescue and set up a place to meet her with both dogs. We were introduced to Francesca and Emily separately and spent time with them. It was difficult to decide between the two dogs because they are both really lovable dogs, but we decided to adopt Emily. We came home with Emily (now named Maddie) along with a wonderful starter kit from Karen containing DVDs on dog training, her micro-chip, a heart worm pill, health records, vacination records, lots of literature, just to name a few things. Karen has always been available to us whenever we have a question, and we have kept in touch by phone and email. It is obvious to us that she really loves and gives wonderful care to the animals she rescues. We absolutely love Maddie (Emily). She is the sweetest and most loving dog you could ever meet. And she really makes us laugh. Thank you Karen Philhower and Safe Hounds Beagle Rescue for making our lives complete. Ian and Pat Goodman

In April someone dumped three very nice dogs, appearing to be littermate sisters on state parklands across from my house. Two of them were captured fairly easily. One was extremely traumatized and fearful. She lived in the woods for over a week before we could capture her. She had no survival skills. Safe Hounds Beagle Rescue helped every step of the way. The dogs needed to be tested for heartworm and tick borne diseases as they were infested with ticks. They needed treatment for internal parasites. Now, under treatment for Lyme Disease for the past month, they are ready to be spayed at the end of this week. Safe Hounds has been so supportive in every way: they provided advice and expertise in capturing, helping with resources for medical care and testing as well as seeing that their new homes are appropriate. This is all a burden both emotionally and financially but Safe Hounds was so generous thereby making a good future possible for all three.

Karen from Safe Hounds Beagle Rescue is amazing, the orginazation is amazing, the volunteers are amazing, everything about Safe Hounds Beagle Rescue is absolutely wonderful!!! I was looking to adopt my first dog and found the cutest dog on petfinder. After downloading a form and sending it I heard from Karen within a few days. She took the time to "check me out", all of my referances were called, my previous vet to make sure any dog she placed with me would be in good hands. Next she came to meet me and my family to find out what exactly we were looking for in a dog. I fell in love with Jack instantly! He has been a family member now for over 3 years and it's been wonderful!!! When I'm ready to give Jack a playmate I won't even hesitate to use Safe Hounds Beagle Rescue again. I couldn't have been happier with my first pet adoptation experience!!!

It was love at first sight when we met our Phoebe! Karen Philhower had us complete an application and our references were checked thoroughly. Phoebe and Karen came for a visit before the placement was completed. It was a perfect match and the love affair continues. Almost a year later, we decided to get a companion for Phoebe and the natural next step was to call Safe Hounds Beagle Rescue. Once again, the match was perfect! Buddy came for a visit and he and Phoebe bonded immediately and have been attached "at the hip" since. We are forever grateful for the care and treatment our furbabies received from Safe Hounds. It is so very apparent that the pets fostered here are cared for with love. We continue to support and recommend Safehounds with every opportunity and would not hesitate to adopt from them again and again. Thank you Karen and Safe Hounds!

When we lost Auggie, our beagle of fourteen years, there was a piece missing from our home. We found Karen's organization through Petfinder. She did a thorough interview of our family to assess our needs. Then she brought two wonderful beagles out to meet all of us and to get to know us. We ended up choosing Oliver. (I actually think he chose us.) And he has been a very special part of our home ever since. Karen and her organization are very dedicate, passionate, and committed to find good homes for these wonderful dogs.

My Husband and I have always had dogs and we always adopt shelter dogs because their are so many that need a home. We were looking to add a 3rd dog to our pack when we saw a Beagle listed in the local papers from Safe Hound beagle Rescue. We contacted them, filled out an application, provided references and before we new it we had an appointment for them to come to our house with Barney the Beagle to determine how he would interact with our other 2 dogs. We have adopted from several large shelters in the past, like RBARI and North Shore Animal League but the few times we tried a small rescue group it always seemed like they really didn't want to find a good home for their rescues. they were very unresponsive but not Safe Hounds. They truly care about the animals in their care and are very professional and efficient. We were able to give a loving home to a wonderful little guy and if anyone is considering adopting a beagle I would highly recommend you contact Safe Hounds Beagle Rescue!

In 2008, I responded to a beagle that was posted on Petfinder.com. This beagle was from Safe Hounds Beagle Rescue. After being interviewed, they accepted my application and let me adopt my Mia. She is a very sweet, smart beagle and quickly made friends with my other beagle, Sammy. She went to classes to become a Pet Therapy dog. She does pet therapy at Wayne View Care Center, where I work. When I received Mia, she was very shy around other people but was slowly warming up to the residents. In April of 2010, I had her at Wayne View, when she slipped her collar and got loose. She was gone for over a week. During this time, Safe Hound Rescue was there every step of the way. Karen Philhower who runs the rescue, told me everything to do and set up a humane trap to get her back. But the most important thing she did was to keep my spirits up and kept me going. She went way beyond just a simple adoption. She truly cares about each and every animal she has and continues to care even after the adoption. She is definately an angel.

Karen, Philhower, operator of www.safehounds.come, made my beagle adoption process a smooth and safe one. She is very careful because she wants to find permanent and loving homes for her rescue beagles. She is very through. After my written application we were in touch via email on what type of personality I was looking for in a beagle as a good match for my family. She then paid a home visit to me and also did a thorough check of my back yard, where the beagles would be spending a lot of time. She showed me some weak areas of my fence that needed to be repaired so they would stay safe and secure inside (they are notorious escape artists). We then had a meet and greet, and she requests all of the family to attend, of our potential beagle. Since we had a match with our first one, we were able to take her home not long after. During the first few weeks, I was a little nervous and she was never more than an email away for my questions and concerns. Even months later, she still checks up periodically to see how the dogs are doing. Not everyone is like this, some rescue organizations can just chuck dogs at you, you don't have their current health history/habits/personality or any knowledge of them. She also makes sure her new rescues they get a complete vet check, they are up to date with shots such as rabies and lyme disease, makes sure they are fixed/spayed and also treats them for heartworm (they will not be eligible for adoption until all infections clear up). She also has the vet do dental care if they need it. She runs a tight ship and is someone I would highly recommend to use as an adoptive beagle organization.
