Mission: Ryther provides exceptional therapeutic services to young people who are struggling emotionally and behaviorally so they may find a path to healing and hope.
Results: Don's Story: Don came to Ryther as a very young, sweet kid. He had a great sense of humor and comedic timing—in Ryther’s talent show he performed a comedy routine dressed in a little suit. However, Don was hyperactive, short-tempered, impulsive, and was unable to calm himself down for hours on end. On top of that, Don had a history of self-harming. He would attempt to jump out of windows or out of moving cars. While at Ryther, his therapist and staff worked with him to identify his feelings and attach his behaviors to those feelings so that he could catch himself before his behavior spiraled out of control. The “Red, Yellow, Green” program helped him monitor his impulsivity and his self-harming tendencies. If Don became unsafe, he’d move from green to yellow to red as quickly as his behavior warranted. When Don left for a foster home (a perfect fit because the family was of the same culture as Don), he had learned to care for himself by learning relaxation and soothing skills, healthy boundaries, and how to regulate his emotions—although not the comedic ones!
