Causes: Philanthropy, Public Foundations
Mission: Formed in 1925, this club has been going strong for almost 100 years, funding and volunteering for worthy projects such as learn-to-swim, learn-with-me, interact, and an international youth exchange program. Were also dedicated to supporting important projects around the world, such as helping to educate girls in developing countries (uganda right now) and eradicating polio from the planet! We award thousands of dollars each year to deserving local organizations through community grants, a teacher mini-grant program, and scholarships. And we do more than give money; we volunteer for projects that improve our community and we travel around the world to contribute our labor as well as our money.
Programs: The foundation supports a number of educational programs including scholarships for six overcoming obstacles students and three exemplary srjc graduates. The learn with me program is in its 30th year of volunteers assisting k-5 students with reading and other tutoring. Our 32 year-old learn to swim program strives to teach every second grade child in sebastopol basic water safety/swimming skills. We have now taught over 10,000 kids water safety. We provide a hard copy dictionary to every third grader in 9 schools. Other annual events include a high school speech contest and vocationally-focused trade path awards.
the community grants program funds many worthwhile and needed projects throughout west county communities. Approximately 2/3 of the grants were educational in focus while the rest helped the community-at-large. Much of the funding for these grants comes from our annual gala event, which in 2016 was the lobster boil.
sebastopol rotary foundation embraces rotary internationals commitment to world peace and the betterment of poor people around the globe. We commit both money and volunteer time, with some of our most meaningful and memorable projects being the work we have done with our own hands in some of the farthest corners of the world. Our current focus is keeping girls in school by implementing a comprehensive solution for rural villages in uganda. We are excited with a new cost effective construction method employing reinforced dirt bags while training locals in how to do it.
