Roshni Academy

Programs: Roshni provides year-round after school training workshops for girls in grades 8-11. Through these workshops, the girls develop self confidence, communication skills, stress management skills, spoken english and computer skills. They also learn time management, hygiene, legal rights, and conflict management. Research has shown that these non-academic soft skills are just as important for girls to attain well paying jobs or achieve admission into top universities as their academics are. Therefore, this program helps bring bright, underprivileged girls closer to the realization of their potential by developing the essential skill set required for maximal success in life.

roshni enganged in a partnership with the castilleja school to host 11th grade students in a 10 day visit to india. This is a key learning experience for the roshni girls as they learn both english and computer skills from the castilleja students.

roshni runs teacher training programs to train instructors in our original roshni curriculum. Roshni recruits energetic, high-performing college masters and phd students who have a passion for education and a desire to serve their community. Roshni trains these young women in roshnis curriculum modules and teaching methodology, and then assigns each one to a group of 25 students. These trained instructors are responsible for effectively delivering roshnis programs to the students, and evaluating their progress.

roshni provides scholarships to 100 of the top performing roshni participants each year. Recipients of the scholarships are girls in grades 9-12 or college who live in poverty, yet whose academic average is above 70%. The scholarships support girls by subsidizing the cost of their school fees, books, supplies, uniforms, and other academic expenses required for them to succeed in school. The nurul hasan foundation is roshni's nonprofit partner in india which helps with scholarship selection, monitoring, and distribution processes.

roshni also holds mothers workshops for mothers of our current students. These workshops consist of discussions, activities, and plans for community organization and participation. Topics include gender issues, entrepreneurship, child labor, arranged marriage, environmental issues, education, abuse, and more. Activities include leadership, conflict management, public speaking, and stress management. These workshops are essential in cultivating parental support for roshni girls. Without the support of their mothers, it is unlikely that roshni students will be supported through a higher education or be encouraged to pursue careers.
