Mission: Root Change is a pro-equity, social change organization that brings people together to question assumptions, think deeply, test ideas, and lead the way to a world built on social justice principles. We strengthen civil society, promote democracy, foster community resilience, and champion a youth-forward perspective. Our core competencies include creative design, organization and system strengthening, support for movement building, and dynamic learning. Our work spans sectors and continents. From promoting collective action initiatives in Nigeria to reducing political polarization in the United States, our work is systems-focused and places emphasis on continuous learning and partnership.
Target demographics: Civil society organizations, informal community associations, networks, and youth around the world.
Direct beneficiaries per year: We provided technical assistance and supported over 250 organizations in 11 countries by collaborating with them to test, pilot, and launch locally led solutions across the world, fostering greater self-reliance and promoting equitable development. Additionally, we directly implemented initiatives that benefited 2,800 individuals including families, community members, frontline workers, and youth. Recent accomplishments include: (1) Introduced a highly effective, nationally recognized peer-to-peer change model called the Community Independence Initiative (CII) to 12 new countries impacting thousands of low-income families. (2) Launched bipartisan Social Labs in three states in which 39 experimentation design teams – made up of 186 members – developed and led projects that engaged more than 1,600 community members in meaningful dialogue and connection.
