Mission: Rsd's educational visionthe faculty, staff, board, families, alumni, and volunteers of rsd are dedicated and committed to providing:resources to enable students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing to develop and achieve their highest level of academic and technical skills;resources for faculty, staff and students to become fluent communicators in both english and american sign language by faculty and staff that are likewise fluent; an environment that is caring, compassionate, and sensitive to the needs of the individual student, in which each will learn to become a participating and contributing member of society;opportunities to involve and utilize rsd's most vital resources - the faculty, staff, families and volunteers - to serve as a viable resource center for the community at large.
Programs: Education and related services - rochester school for the deaf (rsd) provides educational programs for profoundly deaf and hard of hearing children through funding from the new york state department of education (nysed). These programs are based on the unique language, communication, educational, and social needs of each child appointed to the school by the nysed. During the 2016-2017 school year, rsd served 121 students from 41 school districts in 15 counties. Children were enrolled in deaf infant, pre-kindergarten, elementary, middle and high school programs (new york state registered programs awarding regents and high school diplomas, career development and occupational studies commencement credentials and skills and achievement commencement credentials). Accomplishments for this school year include: (see attachment a):attachment a4a. (continued from form 990, part iii, program service accomplishments)- in 2016-2017 rsd graduated seven students. These students successfully completed their rsd educational studies and vocational training. Three were accepted into colleges and four have gained employment in the world of work. - seven families who were new to rsd participated in the donor-supported shared reading project, where hearing parents receive in-home tutoring for reading storybooks to their deaf children in american sign language. - rsd elementary, middle and high school programs are continuing with common core learning standards, including 3rd-8th grade testing program changes. Elementary and middle school departments implemented english language arts and math common core standards. - rsd elementary and middle schoolers participated in the marie jean philip asl poetry and art competition and the patrick a. Graybill storytelling festival. Middle school students participated in the gallaudet university battle of the books national competition for a chance to travel to gallaudet for the national finals. The elementary school implemented a positive behavior interventions & supports (pbis) program. - rsd middle and high school hosted the junior deaf rochester film festival with one rsd high school student earning first-place nationally for his animated short film. Also, students visited the new york state capital complex in albany for advocacy day, helping to raise awareness of 4201 association schools and their funding among legislators and assembly members. High school also hosted their annual community service day, volunteering at various sites in the community. Middle and high school students participated in the city of rochester rain barrel art competition and earned both first and second place honors. - rsd life skills students participated in a variety paid, off-campus work experiences. They experienced a variety of different jobs and communication challenges. - the use of individual student laptops, wikis and blogs continue to be an integral part of rsd high school program instruction. - high school students met several deaf adult role models who visited rsd to present about their upbringing, schooling, family and professional life. - twenty-one (21) high school students participated in the on-campus summer work experience program. - rsd works in collaboration with the rochester city school district to receive title iia funds to be used for teacher and support staff professional development. Rsd teachers and administrative staff attended workshops on various topics: differentiated instruction, executive functioning and brain development, and topics related to art and physical education, transition planning, ela and asl curriculum and instruction and stem education. - the rsd giving tree program supported 12 families and 40 children during the holidays. - four rsd students participated as a team in the gallaudet university national academic bowl competition. - rsd 2016 adventures in education program, which included the participation of deaf students from local public schools and more than 240 attendees from the community, featured a presentation by deaf actor cj jones. - this was another very successful year for rsd athletics:- varsity soccer were the esdaa/northern regional champions; earned 4th place in the wnycaa league- mckenna girod earned several national honors in girls varsity volleyball- boys varsity basketball earned 4th place in the esdaa championship tournament. Senior dyan benjamin earned several national honors- girls varsity basketball earned 4th place in the esdaa championship tournament. Courtney gentzke earned national honors. -fielded middle school teams in soccer, girls and boys basketball, and volleyball - in track and field at the esdaa championships in maryland, rsd girls took 6th place and rsd boys took 9th place.
residential - rochester school for the deaf (rsd) provides housing for students whose individual education plan (iep) requires it as part of their educational programming. Most of these students are residents of school districts outside of monroe county for whom a daily commute would be impractical. During the school year, 37 students participated in the residential program which was operational every monday afterschool through friday morning. A vast majority of these students participated in extra-curricular activities such as athletics, drama club, yearbook club, and other after-school activities at rsd. Several of them were active memebers of jr. Nad (juniornational association of the deaf) which provides leadership opportunities as well.

This program includes: - a home-based infants, toddlers and twos program for children who are deaf or hard of hearing from birth to 18 months of age and our center-based program for children from 18 months to 3 years of age;- a full-day preschool program for children ages 3 and 4- a summer school program designed to support the ongoing educational and social development needs of young children- the shared reading project, an outreach initiative that provides in-home support by an american sign language (asl) specialist to hearing parents of a deaf toddler, tutoring them to read children's stories to their child using american sign language (asl).
