Mission: Riding on insulin serves to empower, activate, and connect the global diabetes community through shared experience and action sports. The organization hosts action sports programs, including skiing/snowboarding camps, bmx camps, and backcountry expeditions for kids, teens, and adults living with type 1 diabetes.
Programs: Action sports camp: riding on insulin hosted 14 ski/snowboard camps and 2 mountain bike camps for kids ages 7-17 with type 1 diabetes (t1d) and their siblings, and one 2-day junior coaches camps to train teenagers how to be role models and volunteers during our programs. Through those events, the organizations served over 500 individuals in the t1d community and touched thousands more through social media, public awareness, and online campaigns. The action sports camps empower kids to take good care of their t1d especially while doing exercise, activates the kids to learn a new skill (or improve an existing one), and connects all the attendees (kids, parents, and volunteers) with others who are just like them, connected to t1d, excited about winter sports, and willing to network with others in the community. In preparation for these camps, riding on insulin created a leadership team of adult skiers and snowboarders living with t1d. Through our leadership training camp, our 30+ coaches have been trained to be leaders in the community, leaders at our camps, and able to teach kids skiing and snowboarding. These coaches are imperative to the expansion and success of our programs around the world by providing a base of role models for participants.
