I am telling you about Ride to Walk from the perspective of a longtime volunteer side walker. Before riders can sit astride the back of a horse, they are evaluated and prescribed a set of exercises by Dr. Corn. Trained staff and volunteers follow that routine and write comments following their riding session. Detailed records are kept and can be shared with referring physicians, schools and insurance companies: all in an effort to cooperatively support the health and well being of the disabled. I’d like to tell you about a young autistic boy that had been expelled from one school after another: combative, uncooperative, and anti social. I witnessed an amazing transformation take place in a years time. Autistic children relate to horses in a way that people can not. He has returned to school and experienced one success after another. He went from isolation to an outgoing member of social groups . Many other stories can be told about individuals that have improved lives due to Ride to Walk.
