Richmond Promise

Programs: Overview: launched in january 2016, the richmond promise is a community-wide college scholarship fund and college success initiative to build a college graduating culture in richmond, ca. The richmond promise scholarship is made possible by a 10-year, $35 million seed-investment from the chevron corporation's environmental and community investment agreement with the city of richmond. The richmond promise is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization with institutional partnerships with the city of richmond, wccusd, contra costa college, university of california and california state university systems. Mission: it is the mission of the richmond promise to promote educational equity by removing barriers and creating pathways to ensure all students in richmond have access to high quality education, excel from high school to higher education, attain a postsecondary degree or certification, thrive in the field of their choice, and become a leader of positive change in their community and the world. Goals: increase the number of students, particularly who are low-income and first in their family to go to college, who: 1. Are exposed to college resources, role models, and experiences throughout k-162. Successfully transition to an accredited university/college directly from high school3. Successfully transfer from community college to 4-year university 4. Complete an associates degree, bachelor degree, or career and technical educationthe scholarship: the cornerstone of the richmond promise is a $1,500 scholarship, renewable up to four years. The scholarship pays for the full cost of attendance to any 2-year, 4-year, cte not-for profit school it is available for any student in richmond who: - is a richmond or north richmond resident - graduates from a high school within the wccusd boundaries - attends at least 9th through 12th grade - completes fafsa/dream act by cal grant deadlinethere are currently over 500 richmond promise scholarship recipients from the graduating class of 2016 and 2017 attending 79 different colleges and universities across the country. 82% are first generation college students. 85% of program expenses go toward supporting the scholarship program.
