Mission: Rhode island for community and justice (ricj) is a social justice organization dedicated to fighting bias, bigotry and racism and promoting understanding and respect among all races, religions and cultures through advocacy, conflict resolution and education. It is ricj's purpose to transform communities to be more inclusive and just by empowering leaders to make institutional change.
Programs: Youth action council (yac) - is a year-round afterschool program for leadership education, mentoring, and community service projects that serves an average of 30 high school aged youth per year. As part of yac, youth create education/service projects that address the ricj mission of fighting prejudice by building understanding and respect in their own communities.
juvenile justice - met with 664 people over one year to help reduce the disproportionate amount of minority juveniles currently in the rhode island juvenile justice system by improving system policies and providing alternative diversions to troubled youth so that they may have a better chance.
project respect: an intensive leadership development program that brought in 30 young people from across the state of rhode island for a one week camp. Participants explored the challenges and rewards of building a community among people with diverse background. Follow up of each participant is continued weekly throughout the year.
the metcalf awards: the metcalf program has the goal of highlighting exemplary diversity journalism, to demonstrate to media how journalism can be done in a more accurate and culturally competent way. The program runs from november through may each year and includes outreach, education and the work of a panel of journalism experts to review and judge submissions, in addition to the culminating event of the presentation of awards in may.
